Interesting that He would do so in a format that is not open to interpretation. "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." (Exodus 20:8-11) The "Gap Theory" was first popularized by a Scottish theologian, Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847), a notable Scottish theologian. The idea can be traced back to the rather obscure writings of the Dutchman Episcopius (1583-1643), and was first recorded from one of Chalmers' lectures in 1814. Although Chalmers' writings give very little information about the gap theory, many of the details are obtained from writers such as the 19th century geologist Hugh Miller, who quoted from Chalmers' lectures. Bible expositors promoted this explanation in reaction to new modernistic theories, such as evolution and the erroneous circular reasoning of the geological and fossil record; each being used to date the other. In this country, the famous Scofield Study Bible made it an almost universally accepted teaching among fundamentalists targeting Genesis 1:2 as subjective instead of descriptive. "And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables." (2 Timothy 4:4) Darwin's "Theory of Evolution" was invented from his misinterpretation of exposure to new found plant, insect and animal species. Even though no species transitional fossils have ever been found, evolutionists continue to promote this theory as fact under the guise that millions of years allows for the unobservable and unprovable metamorphosis of inanimate matter to living organisms. "Intelligent Design" is the only explanation for plant/animal male/female inter-relational perfection and microbiological irreducible complexity and information-stored (DNA) instructional, self-replicating and self-correcting cellular construction. Old Earth geological thought began in the late 1700's with theories imagining thousands of years and progressing until today's headlines when the number of millions to hundreds of millions of years are immediately given for the age of any news-worthy fossil discovery. Geology in itself is not bad as it benefits man from the observable. It's only when unprovable age attributes are supposed from a naturalistic view does it become detrimental to the truth.
